How did you get all these people to do this?
The truth is: I didn’t. In the early
goings, I asked some good friends if I could photograph them,
or if they would introduce me to other women. Things started
off at a glacial pace, because many were skeptical that this
was even a doable project. But soon someone suggested her daughter,
and told friends as well; and then it was spreading by word
of mouth like wildfire! Now, subjects have a tendency to approach
me, whether it is in person right after seeing the exhibit
or reading the book; or through hearing about the project from
a friend or this website and sending an e-mail.
Volunteering was therefore driven by a
response to the project itself. It had nothing to do with my
somehow talking people into this crazy idea. Nor was money
a factor, because I’ve never
paid anyone to let me photograph her. The only way someone may
be a part of this project is because she wants to, period. Fortunately
that has worked.
