What’s the difference between The
Century Project and pornography?
Nudity and pornography are two entirely different
concepts. In our society, we tend to equate nudity and sex. Our
puritanical/Victorian background dictates that sex is basically
sinful, ergo nudity is bad and any depiction of it must therefore
be pornographic. The simple fact is that there is nothing at
all wrong with our bodies, nor with any representation of them
which doesn’t encourage or condone harmful behavior.
The Century Project provides a normal, accurate, and healthy representation
of girls and women; a positive antidote to most of the media depictions. Hardly
pornographic!
In addition, the women featured in The Century Project volunteer
to have their photo taken. In almost all cases I don’t tell
people how to “pose” themselves. A woman is not paid
to have her photo taken, and she writes her own personal statement
to accompany the photo. The women of The Century Project are
transformed from being object to becoming subject. This eliminates
any potential for promoting violence or sexual objectification.
