What sort of women are you looking for?
It is clear that The Century Project is
not finished yet. I still have ideas for which I haven’t found the right
people. There are subject matters not currently present in the
project which need to be included. Some chronological gaps remain,
although I’m not trying to do this as an arithmetic exercise,
filling in every single numerical age. Moreover, people approach
me with stories I might never imagine on my own and which are
important to include.
I currently am hoping to include more of the following:
- More older women, especially 90 and up, but also in their
60s, 70s, and 80s.
- Significantly greater ethnic representation. I was comfortable
going to press with Volume I given what I had so far, but want
to be even more inclusive going forward.
- Emotionally difficult situations—there
are a lot of possibilities here. Examples might include (but
not be limited to): female genital mutilation, battering,
and teen pregnancy.
- The Century Project has many
images which I could never have imagined on my own; women
have come up to me with a story to tell, and in many cases
it was an important one. I assume—and hope!—that
this will continue.
- The foregoing should not be interpreted
to mean that I am no longer interested in middle-aged white
women, for example, nor someone who comes under the body-image
and/or eating disorders “umbrella”.
I most definitely am, as long as a new subject/image/statement
is not too repetitive of what has already been portrayed.
- Lastly, it is hardly necessary for a
woman’s interest
in posing to be associated with trauma or emotional distress—I
welcome submissions from those who are merely compelled by
this project and its work. After all, the human life cycle
includes both joy and pain.
There will be a Volume II of Bodies and Souls: The Century
Project. I am always happy to introduce another subject and
topic into The Century Project. If you’re interested
