While the Century Project has a wonderful track record of having helped untold numbers of people over the years, an unfortunate reality is that is a very expensive piece of work to produce.

For the most part, it has been self-funded, though that has brought years of often severe hardship to a well-intentioned photographer whose resumé of necessity includes the sobriquet “starving artist.”

Various private individuals have contributed in excess of $60,000; a very generous figure, yet spread out over a period of over twenty years.

As wonderful as this project has been, in a post-Mapplethorpe world, one in which the cultural climate has been dictated by the conservative right, it is next to impossible to get corporate or foundation funding for work such as this.

Yet there are several significant needs outstanding.

In the first place, the project is not finished; there are still many important situations and individuals out there whose stories demand to be told. The good news is that as word of Century spreads, it is becoming easier and easier to find the necessary subjects (for the most part, they volunteer or are introduced by mutual friends). On the other hand, there are lots of expenses associated with that: photographic, travel, and simple living expenses while on the road.

The second main area is to put together a traveling exhibit, so that more and more people may benefit from experiencing the project. This too takes time, and some very significant material expenses. By helping this independent traveling exhibit and related Century Project activities become a reality, you can touch thousands of women and men across North America.

Any level of assistance would be very much appreciated! The Century Project is no longer a pipe dream; it is real and it works, but it still needs a lot of help.

Thank you in advance. Your gift will help to combat unhealthy attitudes towards females of all ages.

Frank.
